Composite Skill Lab Setup for CBSE Schools

What is a Composite Skill Lab for School?

A Composite Skill Lab for School is a modern learning space that enables students to develop practical, industry-relevant skills through hands-on activities, real-world projects, and experiential learning. Unlike traditional classrooms that focus primarily on theory, a Composite Skill Lab helps students apply their knowledge using tools, equipment, and technology across multiple skill domains.

As recommended by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) under NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, a Composite Skill Lab for Schools supports multidisciplinary skill development and prepares students for higher education, future careers, and entrepreneurship.

Why is a Composite Skill Lab Important for Schools?

A Composite Skill Lab bridges the gap between classroom learning and practical application by encouraging students to think critically, solve problems, innovate, and collaborate. It helps schools implement CBSE Skill Education while creating a future-ready learning environment.

The NCF-SE 2023 identifies three major areas of skill-based learning that every school should promote:

  • Work with Life Forms – Agriculture, health, nutrition, and environmental sustainability.
  • Work with Machines and Materials – Robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), coding, electronics, engineering, design thinking, and manufacturing.
  • Work on Providing Human Services – Hospitality, healthcare, financial literacy, communication, and entrepreneurship.

Mandatory Implementation of CBSE Composite Skill Lab for CBSE School

According to the latest CBSE Composite Skill Lab guidelines, all schools are required to establish a Composite Skill Lab to promote skill-based and experiential learning in line with NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023. For new CBSE affiliations, a fully equipped Composite Skill Lab is mandatory before affiliation is granted, while existing CBSE schools must set up the lab within three years to comply with the updated norms. Schools can either create a 600 sq. ft. Composite Skill Lab for Classes VI–XII or establish two separate 400 sq. ft. labs for Classes VI–X and XI–XII, ensuring students gain practical, future-ready skills through hands-on learning.
